A collaborative paper between 3CPG faculty member Alon Keinan of Cornell and Erez Levanon of Bar-Ilan University in Israel was published April 12, 2016 in the journal Genome Research. Their study investigates how APOBEC enzymes cause rapid and site-specific mutations in primates (including modern humans.) APOBECs in primate cells defend against viruses by inciting mutations within the viral genome; this process may inadvertently generate mutations in the primate genome.
